Course overview and goals

[Summary of Lecture] This lecture will focus on fundamental analysis of mass transfer required for design and optimization of separation process. Some exercises concerning the mass transfer analysis will be also conduct in this lecture.
[Aim of Lecture] This lecture aims for students to understand how to analyze the mass transfer using fundamental equation on separation processes, such as drying and adsorption.

Class flow

This lecture will be conducted as (1) Fundamental equation on mass transfer, (2) Mass transfer coefficient and boundary layer theory and (3) Mass transfer on separation process.

Class 1 Molecular diffusion To explain the fundamentals of diffusion equation.
Class 2 Molecular diffusion and mass transfer To analyze diffusion for unsteady-state in stationary fluid.
Class 3 Mass transfer of convection in one dimension To analyze mass transfer of convection in one dimension.
Class 4 Mass transfer with chemical reaction To explain and analyze mass transfer with chemical reaction.
Class 5 Mass transfer coefficient and boundary layer theory To explain relationship between mass transfer coefficient and boundary layer theory.
Class 6 Mass transfer in separation operation: Gas absorption To analyze mass transfer in gas absorption.
Class 7 Examination To analyze mass transfer in chemical process

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Score evaluation will be by confirming the level of understanding fundamental equation, boundary layer theory and mass transfer in separation process and class participation.
