Course overview and goals
[Summary of the course] Electron transfer is a fundamentally important process involved in not only a wide variety of chemical reactions but also the working principle of organic electronic devices. However, there are few courses dealing with this subject comprehensively. Understanding of the basis of electron-transfer processes will be useful for future research activities. This course will focus on electron-transfer processes found in organic oxidation and reduction reactions, and photoinduced electron-transfer reactions. For students at the other undergraduate majors, the course covers the fundamentals of organic chemistry and provides the opportunity to learn advanced science and technology as well as fundamentals in the fields of applied chemistry.
[Aim of the course] The aim of this course is to foster students' understanding of (1) oxidation and reduction of organic molecules, which is one of the most fundamental methods in organic synthesis and (2) the basis and applications of electron-transfer reactions induced by light irradiation.
Course description and aims
By the end of this lecture, students will be able to acquire the abilities to:
(1) Explain the principles and applications of electron-transfer reactions through understanding of oxidation and reduction of organic compounds.
(2) Explain electron-transfer reactions induced by photoirradiation.
(3) Explain photoinduced electron-transfer reactions of organic molecules in solution.
Keywords
Oxidation and reduction, Kinetics of electron-transfer reactions, Photoinduced electron-transfer reactions, Electron-transfer reactions in solution
Competencies
- Specialist skills
- Intercultural skills
- Communication skills
- Critical thinking skills
- Practical and/or problem-solving skills
Class flow
This course will proceed in the following order: (1) basis of oxidation and reduction reactions, (2) fundamental issues of electron transfer, (3) basic theory of electron-transfer reactions, and (4) various electron-transfer reactions of organic molecules in the solution. In the final class, the level of students' understanding will be tested through an examination.
