Course overview and goals

History of technology developments, the current situation of the basic technology for robots in both hardware and software and several applications of these technologies are introduced.
Students can learn about the history of robot technology, basic and advanced technology of hardware and software for robots, and problems with future applications to be solved.

By the end of this course, students will learn the history and the current situation of robot technology development with several applications.

Various researchers belonging to the National Research and Development Agency and engineers of manufacturers give lectures utilizing their practical experience on a wide range of cutting-edge topics related to robot technology.

Class flow

Each class introduces a different topic of robot technology. Submission of written report is required for every class.

Class 1 Introduction to Robot Technology History of robot technology development is introduced.
Class 2 Robot hands Classification and features of robot hands and basics of grasping are introduced.
Class 3 Motion Control Technology for Industrial Robots Motion control technologies for Mechatronics system such as industrial robots, machine tools, and semiconductor manufacturing equipments are introduced.
Class 4 Robot Vision Technical trend of vision sensing and its applications to robot vision are introduced.
Class 5 Humanoid Robots Introduce the history of humanoid robot research, system configuration, application examples, and technical issues.
Class 6 Robot Middleware Robot middleware as software platforms which realize easy construction of robotic system is introduced.
Class 7 ITS Technology Technical trend and problems of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) are introduced.
Class 8 Digital Human Human body shape/motion measurement, modeling, and its application toward human-robot collaboration are introduced.
Class 9 Surgical Robots Technical trend and problems of surgical robots are introduced.
Class 10 Investigation&Inspection Robots Technical trend, practical examples and issues of robots for disaster investigation and infrastructure inspection are introduced.
Class 11 Micro and Nano Robots Methods of design and manufacturing of micro/nano robots are introduced. Their applications are also introduced.
Class 12 Multiple Robots Coordination Technical trend and applications of multiple robots coordination are introduced.
Class 13 Applied Robotics technology for novel system of Industrial field The challenges and problems in developing novel systems applied robotics technology is introduced based on actual examples.
Class 14 Assistive robot Technical trend, applications, and issues of various assistive robots are introduced.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The assessment is based on the quality of written reports and on the status of submission thereof.
