Course overview and goals

By forming a multicultural group composed of Japanese and International students, through lectures and self-pace learning by SPOCs, students will 1) deepen the knowledge about traditional technology taking steel making as specific example, and 2) proceed with intercultural co-learning.

Course description and aims

1. Students will conduct research on traditional technology of home country, including its historical, cultural and social background.
2. Students will conduct multicultural group work in order to equip with skills related to intercultural co-learning.
3. By understand traditional technology of home country and taking Japanese Iron made through Tatara Iron Making method as specific example, students will make proposal to revival and development of traditional technology of their home countries with global perspective.

Class flow

The course will be composed of following;
1.Lecture and self-pace learning by SPOCs, Research and information sharing about traditional technology of home country.
2.On-site workshop on 1) Tatara Iron Making, 2) Sword smith (paper knife making), and 3) Japanese sword appreciation
3.Group proposal presentation on reviral and development of traditional technology
4.Individual report about specific proposal and development of PR contents.

*Aforementioned activities may be conducted partly on-line.

Class 1 Wed. 10/28, 5-8th periods Introduction, Lecture, Charcoal cutting Supplement day for charcoal cutting (Practical Training) on Wed. 11/4, 5-6th periods <In-class> ・Orientation; Group work, Instruction about proposal making and final report, Announcement of group members ・Lecture; Traditional technology and industrial restructuring <Practical Training> ・Charcoal cutting (for Tatara Iron Making and blacksmith) <Assignments> ・Self-learning by SPOCs (History of iron, iron processing, sword smith, and traditional iron crafts) , self-lead small quiz. ・Prepare presentation about home country's traditional iron making technology, its history, social background, and industry.
Class 2 Wed. 11/11, 5-6th periods Understanding of Iron industry and utilization in each country <In-class group work> ・Sharing information about home country's traditional iron making technology, its history, social background, and industry. ・Discuss similarities and differences, as well as points of clarification. <Assignments> ・Sharing proposed ideas for revival/development traditional technology based on the specific situation of each country. ・Collect necessary information to make proposal for revival/development traditional technology. ・Report group work process (Ideas for proposal, discussion points, additional research, and so forth.)
Class 3 Sat. 11/14, 08:50-17:00 Practical Training <Practical Training > Engineering schools' waste collecting site ・Simplified Tatara Iron Making ・Black smith (Paper knife making) ・Japanese sword appreciation <Assignments> ・Develop specific proposal on proposal for revival/development of traditional technology ・Collect further information related to proposal making. ・Report group work process (Specific proposal, additional research, and so forth.)
Class 4 Wed. 11/25, 5-7th periods Group work and Final group proposal presentation for revival/development of traditional technology <In-class group work and final group presentation> ・Group work for finalization of presentation ・Final proposal presentation for revival/development of traditional technology, based on global perspectives and taking Japanese iron made through Tatara Iron Making method as specific example. <Assignments> ・Based on proposal presentation, complete individual report for revival/development of traditional technology including its historical/cultural backgrounds and customs of home country. Prerequisites

1.Students who wish to enroll/participate in this course should have English proficiency (TOEIC score 750 or above, TOEFL-iBT score 80 or above), so that he/she will be able understand the lectures and actively participate in discussions.
2.Students should have interest on Japanese traditional technology (Tatara Iron Making) and its product (Japanese Iron).

Priority will be given to students who have enrolled in Global Scientists and Engineers Course.
Due to the limitation on number of participants, if the registration have reached more than the maximum limit, the selection may be made based on the credits received for the completion of GSEC course.
Students have to submit individual final report in English.
For the preparation of group work and practical training, students should complete course registration by Thursday, 15th October.
