Syllabus

Course overview and goals

This course consists of lectures and exercises on listening comprehension of Japanese. Through listening practices focused on Japanese news, students will learn how to listen to and to discuss its contents.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) catch the keyword through listening;
2) understand the main points in each paragraph;
3) discuss the impressions and opinions.

Class flow

Listening comprehension and group discussion will be conducted at each lesson. Lectures are mainly delivered during the first half of this course, and the latter half will be focused on news materials.

Class 1 Listening lecture 1 Practice listening to the lecture only with audio sounds.
Class 2 Listening lecture 2 Practice listening to the lecture only with audio sounds.
Class 3 Listening news 1 Practice listening to the news in video.
Class 4 Listening news 2 Practice understanding the lecture by watching some video footages.
Class 5 Listening news 3 Practice understanding news programs by watching video footages and discuss the contents of the video.
Class 6 Exercises: Making the report of the news Practice understanding the contents of news and documentary programs by watching video footages, and sum up what you know.
Class 7 Examination: Presentation of the report Conduct some presentations on what you understand through this course.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Assessment will be conducted based on students' homework(20%), quizzes(20%), presentations(30%), and the final report(30%).

Prerequisites

Only for international students who have completed Intermediate Japanese 6 or the equivalent level.
