Syllabus
Course overview and goals
This course addresses questions involving linguistic translation and intercultural communication by group works and student-led discussions. Its aim is to offer students some key concepts to approach translation and intercultural communications so that they can gain confidence in navigating themselves in multi-cultural set-up. Students will also train their skills to read and summarise assigned readings in English.
Course description and aims
At the end of this course students will be able to:
・feel more confident about their English by systematically reviewing four skills in English
・paraphrase effectively and summarise an assigned text.
・respond to an assigned reading with critical eyes.
・have better understanding of intercultural communication

Class flow
(1) Each student chooses an article to share with other students in class. (2) They understand the content of the article and discuss issues in the text. (3) They check their comprehension (main points of the argument, topic sentence, etc.) and discuss their presentation/essay plan. (4) Feedback to class. (5) Tutor's comments and Q&A session. (7) Peer-critique session

| Class 3 | Summary skills 2 + discussion | Based on the feedback received in week 2, students improve their summary skills. |
| Class 4 | Academic writing/presentation skills 1 | Students review the basics of academic writing skills and practise them. |
| Class 5 | Academic writing/presentation skills 2 | Students complete their academic writing in class and peer-critique their work. |
| Class 6 | Presentation and debate about students' essay/presentation | Students submit their essay/presentation script incorporating their summary. . |
| Class 7 | Final presentation | Students submit their essay incorporating their summary writing. Students review all the skills learned in quarters 1 and 2. |
Study advice (preparation and review)
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
