Course overview and goals

This course deals with the basic concepts and background of education of the mind. And it will focus on value conflicts in public education. Topics include death education and patriotic education.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand what education of the minds is,
2) explain the controversies regarding education of the minds.
3) express their own thoughts

Class flow

Students must respond to the question from a teacher through the discussions or short reports. And they should reach the same degree of understanding as they exchange their points of view.

Class 2 Can we teach children “respect for life” ? (1) Write a short report on your experience of “death education.”
Class 3 Can we teach children “respect for life” ? (2) Discuss about this subject.
Class 4 Can we teach children “respect for life” ? (3) Report the content of the last week's discussion.
Class 5 Do we need the "patriotic education" ? (1)
Class 6 Do we need the "patriotic education" ? (2) Discuss about this subject
Class 7 Do we need the "patriotic education" ? (3) Report the content of the last week's discussion.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
