Syllabus
Course overview and goals
This advanced course is designed for learners who have acquired basic ability of Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language. The aim is to develop an ability to use the language effectively for purposes of practical communication. The course is based on the linked language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. We will use the materials that introduce various sides of Chinese society, we hope it will help students to improve their abilities of communication in Chinese, at the same time, to have a good understanding of Chinese culture and society.
Course description and aims
At the end of this course, students will be able to grasp the main ideas and arguments of popular books or newspapers in Chinese, to have practical Chinese abilities including skills of listening and speaking for studying abroad in the future.

Class flow
At the beginning of each class, the instructor will explain the essential points of the class, students are required to read the articles of Chinese and translate it into Japanese. Towards the end of class, students are given exercise problems related to what is taught on that day. The instructor shows solutions to the exercise problems, and give students homework to write compositions, will check it every other week.

Study advice (preparation and review)
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Evaluation methods and criteria
Students’ course scores are based on ordinary exercises (60%) and report (40%).
