Course overview and goals

[Summary of the course] In this course, first of all, chemical bonds will be reviewed. Stereochemistry, π-conjugation, aromaticity, and reactive intermediates will be explained.
[Aim of the course] Many functional organic compounds such as medicines, biologically active compounds, and electronic materials have been developed based on the structures and physical properties. In this course, students review organic chemistry and acquire the ability to design functional organic compounds.

Course description and aims

By the end of this course, students acquire the following abilities to:
(1) Explain characters of chemical bonds.
(2) Explain stereochemistry of organic molecules in detail.
(3) Explain importance of pai-electron delocalization and aromaticity.
(4) Explain fundamentals of cations, anions, radicals, and carbenes.

Class flow

This course will proceed in the following order: (1) chemical bonds, (2) stereochemistry, (3) π-conjugation and aromaticity, (4) reactive intermediates. In the last day, practice problems and interpretation of them will be carried out to confirm the level of understanding.

Class 1 Chemical bonds Understand fundamentals of chemical bonds.
Class 2 Chemical bonds and molecular distortion Explain general aspects of chemical bonds and molecular distortion.
Class 3 Stereochemistry Explain stereochemistry of organic molecules in detail.
Class 4 π-Conjugation and aromaticity 1 Explain π-conjugation and aromaticity.
Class 5 π-Conjugation and aromaticity 2 Explain various aromatic compounds including annulenes.
Class 6 Reactive intermediates Explain importance of reactive intermediates for organic synthesis and materials.
Class 7 Practice problems and interpretation for confirming the level of understanding Solve practice problems by accurate understanding of the above all lectures.

Study advice (preparation and review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
